and they didn't release the phone here b/c of the deal made between sanrio and okwap. THIS phone and about 3 others were made to commenorate the 30th anniversary of the sanrio/HK brand. it was meant to be a Japanese/Asian only thing. but sanrio knows a smart business deal when they see one and started having the phone available to various online retailors. i saw one once that ran for $700. but if you think about it, in the long run, no matter where you buy a phone or what type of phone it is, if it's BRAND SPANKING NEW and is the HOTTEST thing on the market, you're gonna spend a pretty penny on it, if you just buy the handset and no cell phone plan to go with it. case in point: a brand new blackberry from cingular can be about $500 if you just bought the phone and no plan. they get you with the plans!

you can get the phone on Ebay from anywhere between $.99 to $500 depending upon how bidding goes and whether or not you just want to buy the thing outright. i got mine outright for about $300 from an aussie. it's an awesome phone, and since there aren't any instructions in English, you'll have to mess around with it to get it to english. but the ONLY languages it uses are English and any of the main languages/dialects of Asia.

to get it from it's default Asian language, hit the joystick button in the middle of the phone. go down to the last row, middle icon (it should be HK with her signature red bow). hit the ok/green/kitty button to the side of the joystick button. click through the first set of options you come to three times. you can then scrool from side to side til you get "English." hit the ok/green/kitty button to the side of the joystick button. this sets your phone to English. from there, you just have to mess around with the phone to see how it works. get to know it if you will.

as for web browsing. mine doesn't work either. i'm thinking that's due to the fact that in America, the cell phone companies have the cell phones made to their specifications. if they didn't make it, even with your SIM card in it, it won't work right. MOST HK A236's you find out there are "unlocked" which means they'll work with any SIM card, but that doesn't mean your network supports the phone's different settings.

as for texting (sending and receving) i haven't had any problems with it. my MAIN problem is getting voicemail notifications. i used to, but i don't any more. if i miss a call, i just check the voicemail (i plugged my own number under the Number 1 speed dial key since my network didn't support the phone, so when it read my SIM card, it didn't know to put the voicemail number in that spot) to see if i've missed messages. if i go out of my network, i check it sporadically when i come back into my network to see anything has come in yet b/c lag time between going out and coming back into the network can be a bitch. sometimes, if i know i'll be out of my network for a while (ie. at the movies, in a basement, in a building that's a "dead zone"...) i just use the closest available land line to call myself and other ppl b/c my phone/network is being craptacular. you'll know you got a voice mail if you recieve what looks like a text, but there's nothing in it. in the message, tho, you'll notice a phone icon and 00 underneath it. this means you have a voicemail. i'm ALWAYS getting these texts after checking my voicemail and finding that there were messages there. :p

hope all this helps and enjoy your new phones! :)

The Hello Kitty phone totally rocks. It is a bummer that it is not in english. . . BUT they really should send these to the U.S. I think they would be a great success (as long as they are in english and not chineese). : )
