Wicked Laser’s Laser Pointer

Sure looks like Yoda’s lightsaber eh? Although this one certainly doesn’t cut limbs. That’s not saying that these laser pointers by Wicked Lasers are weak. In fact, these Class IIIB portable laser pointers are one of the strongest and brightest out there.

These laser pointers certainly aren’t toys and should be handled with care. Available in 10 different brightness, the most powerful $559 pointer dwarfs the lower-end $99 pointer. While the former is capable of melting plastic, burning skin, and making holes in black trash bags, the latter is only capable of being eye candy. But still, it can cause serious damage to the eyes if looked upon directly. And the damage is supposedly even greater than looking directly at the sun.

Just so you may witness the power of their lasers, Wicked Lasers has put up pictures and videos of their pointers in action. The videos are especially worth the download, ranging from black-tape-cutting, balloon-popping, plastic-tearing, to reflection tricks.

I’m pretty sure you readers out there have some fancy ideas for these laser pointers. Tell me, what kind of wicked fun you’ll have, if you happen to own one of these $559 pseudo-death-ray.

Update (January 8, 2006): If you do plan on buying one of these pointers, enter 4096 as your the referrer id and you’ll receive a 5% discount upon checking out. Do note that I’ll be getting a commission. So if that bothers you, please, do not use it. This is merely to give you an option to lower prices.

I think these would cause considerably more damage if you used these at a cinema. =P

i got one of these
the 55mw
fucking powerfull

but if they get in ur eyes for a second – bam! – ur blind
kinda scary

3. Liam McGowan Says:

if anyone is thinking of purchasing a wicked laser then you can receive a discount by quoting my sales ID at checkout… its 2818

i personally own a 95mW – its like nothing else anyone i have ever shown it to has ever seen… the police helicopter fears it..

excellent customer service and a quality product…

4. notagoodidea Says:

This is DEFINETLY the stupidest invention ever… Why would this be sold?
Do you think this is a good idea to have w/ so many brain-dead kids running around?

I dont.

5. b@c.de Says:

this shit looks like the fuckin’ laser sights in shoot-em-up movies… any idiot who has graduated high school knows that a laser beam isn’t actually a solid beam you can see perfectly without some sort of particles in the way to diffract the beam…

6. lol Says:

guess you havent graduated high school.
lasers can be seen without smoke around it if its powerful enough such as the ones in the pictures

7. "Stupidest" Says:

“This is DEFINETLY the stupidest invention ever… Why would this be sold?

That was kind of an oxymoron seeing as how it is most stupid.

8. SgtRhoruns Says:

I own a 125mW and a 95mW. Pretty fun melting stuff, and lighting candles.

9. ad13 Says:

holy shit… b@c.de you’re retarded. go do some research.

10. Kel Says:

There are too many idiots in the world for items like this to ever be used safely.

11. Phil Says:

This should be considered a weapon at the high end. And I have to call on the government to take some control of this technology because in all honesty, when I hear from the responses of the readers here that it’s fun…..to melt candles and “stuff” and that police helicopters “fear” it, I think too many people will use it irresponsibly.

12. Adam Says:

Oh, sure, let’s let the fucking government control everything. People aren’t as stupid as most of us think, it’s just that we think of the stupidest ones. The kind of person who would shine this into other’s eyes without knowing what they are doing does not have the wherewithal to purchase anything through the internet, so don’t worry too much about that.

So let’s say, hypothetically, it is considered a weapon. I don’t see where the government should come in.

Quit relying on your government to make your world safe, they have thier heads so far up thier asses it isn’t funny!

13. mimas Says:

i also think that this is a waste of time i have a 5 mw green laser and i use it for giving sky tours for astronomy my small 5 mw laser shines for 2 km and requires very little particulate to be visable. and also was only 150$ Can. so unless u are one of these ’stupid’ people and have no respect for anything and who will abuse this device and others like it , then don’t waste u’r money. wait for it to be fine tuned into a cutting tool that is safe for everyone. it will only be a matter of time and no one will be hurt in the mean time sorry if this seams to much of a canadian view —instead of hurt death and destruction :0)

14. yo daddy Says:

i agree with the idiot this is dangerous even though it look and sound fun but u dont have to take it to the government they are our enemys they arent here to help us they are here to hide secret from us and to take out the negroes and wetback.

You forgot about the little sheet heads.

Sorry, what?

Please feel free to join the 21st century in your own time. Meanwhile, keep your racist ignorance to yourself. Go stare at a laser or spend some time polishing your gun collection. Twat.

…and you are guilty of racist remarks by suggesting that he has a gun collection. Sorry, but not every person who is racist is your stereotypical “redneck”.

Get a clue.

22. Spin Says:

I need one to level the kitchen cabinets I’m installing.

23. empty Says:

I think the sheet head was a sarcastic remark about the state of the US Government and the ever present “terrorist” threat that seems to result in the persecution of those of Middle Eastern descent. I’d recommend thinking before you type Groovy Bob. That was not a very groovy comment. Admittedly ’sheet head’ is not the friendliest thing to say but used in this context it is actually a jab at the USA’s racist mentality towards certain miniorities.

24. Joshua K Says:

That’s a strong laser. $600 to burn things when ya can get a magnifying glass for under $4 or a Scripto for $1.00.

To the person who quoted about the pilots spotting the green lasers. It was all probably from the same one, or it could be from an astronomy class and they were pointing at the stars. Does it mention if the sky was clear or cloudy?

Is a low powered laser by itself threatening to a plane?

25. mors Says:

well….think to yourself…do you want to be on a plane where the pilot is at the very least “distracted” by a laser pointer in his face….

26. a person Says:

Why the hell would someone refer to the american government as ‘little’ sheet heads… if anything i’d say his probably refering to moronic children though a link between the word moronic can be seen for these two things by many people heh.

Main point is that this laser will probably get out of hand once some child puts both of his eyes out and his irresponsible parents decide to make some lawsuits and sue these laser company’s or agree to some settlement including in a government outlaw to these devices… the parents can’t blame themselves so why not blame someone else. for shame on society, for shame…

So get your hands on one of these fancy menacing lasers before it’s to late!

27. butter Says:

I don’t know how you could even aim a laser into the cockpit or the face of a pilot. Its hard to hold steady in any case, I could not see this being very steady at 1000 – 5000 feet at the end of a laser..

28. bravo Says:

OK I admit it even if most will not. Yes that is a dangerous item in the wrong hands and “yes” if I purchase it I will use it to irritate harrass and annoy certain individuals that have caused me grieve. Yes some will use it for its intended purpose but I freely admit that I would not, hence I will not purchase this item for not only that reason but dang! that little booger is pricey!

29. logtar Says:

All I can say is that no matter what videos they might have now, we will see some more once some college stundents get a hold of the 599 one.

30. lookyatthemorons Says:

Ok, to clear a few things up for you boneheads.

a) to the idiot who said that only lasers can be seen aided by smoke or moisture… what do you think is in the air all the time? pollutants. if you have a bright enough laser even these miniscule particles will light up like a christmas tree.

b) to the tool’s who aim these lasers at aircraft know this, aiming a high-powered laser (>5mw) at any aircraft (heli, plane, glider, wtfever) is a felony.

c) to the guy who seems to think that pointing a laser at something 5000 feet away requires “precise” tools is mistaken. i’ve seen one of these lasers light up the entire side of a barn from like a mile away. you can paint a airplane in the sky with these and the pilot will easily see the light from the ground because the entire plane is being engulfed by the distant laser’s light.

d) to anyone who thinks they can burn someone with these lasers should go ahead and waste the money on one. this isn’t star wars man. you have to hold the laser really close to the skin (6 inches) and keep it there for a few seconds before you’ll even start to feel your skin warm up.

e) i personally know a guy who fucked up his eye because he was messing with his laser without his goggles on and it accidently reflected off a cd case. a cd case guys… go ahead and buy one of these if you’re stupid… pretty soon you’re gonna be blind and stupid. so please, go for it.

The average idiot can’t afford the high end one, so the world it safe for now

34. highendlaze Says:

Eh Steve, not true… WL just released a high-powered 100mW red laser for under $150.

35. College Student Says:

I’m a CS major and a minor in physics/math, I have no literal sense whatsoever but I feel the need to add my opinion to this.

For all you people who don’t own a high powered laser need to be quiet, you don’t know what you are talking about do some research then come back and put your 2 worthless cents because you still don’t own one.

To solve the first laser myth, it “looks” like a straight line “IF” photographed/filmed/seen from the source, because as distance increases width of perception decreases, that’s why people look like ants if you look down from a skyscraper.

Basically from a distance a high powered laser is as bright as a window of any skyscraper, you could mistake it for green intersection lights from an airplane. Yes it’s noticeable, but not a “CONSTANT STRAIGHT BEAM”. If pilots are distracted by something like that I wonder how they survive with that sun constantly glaring in their face during broad daylight. A small laser like that with such high divergence can’t possibly be brighter than the sun from that far away.

Of course a laser is noticeable to an airplane but I highly doubt it would distract them much unless you have a .1 MRAD high precision laser with computer controlled high precision real time aiming device with a homing algorithm built in. Most “portable” lasers are 1.2MRAD which from far away looks like a long green flashlight, not a straight beam, and most people don’t have that kind of technology.

Legal Issues:
Ok guys, I personally own a high level output 30mW and a 169mW peak output 5 point safety laser device approved by the FDA, I even have a “FDA Declaration for imported electronic products subjected to radiation control standards” that comes with it. It includes a 2sec delay, key lock, max measured output, safety sticker, shutter, pull lock, light signaling on/off of the power of the device.

These “Wicked” lasers are built in china and are illegal in the united states without the 5 point safety features. They only have a on off button… This means cops can take it, and ask you where you got it at the station.

Don’t believe me?

Kids Issues:
I just talked to a 17 year old, he wanted one, he’s the type of person who throws apples from 8 stories high at a parking lot trying to hit someone. The only reason he feels like he can’t have it, is because he’s not 18 and can’t get a credit card. I see a lot of irresponsible kids out there wanting to get a hold of one. At one point I felt like a 14 year old once I got my hands on my first 30mW one but once I saw how brightly it reflects white surface I’m insanely paranoid about the effects of both these weapons. (go ahead call me crazy, but I find this permanent blindness device a bit dangerous, since reflecting the beam of a white surface is brighter than the sun, not to mention CDs and mirrors)

Although distance wise pointing this thing at helicopters and planes is the same as holding a flashlight 5 feet from the plane, the beam divergence is so great that up to maybe 200 feet away the beam is so wide that it does not cause such severe damages if pointed directly at someone, although I may also be very wrong considering I tested this on a dark background(white surfaces reflect a lot and damage the eye when you use a ruler up close) ~10 feet away from a source in my own room. (I noticed the diameter went from ~1.5mm to ~1cm)

So anyway, even so pointing at planes is very dumb, hence you are literally guiding a finger of god within a 8 mile radius towards you for cops and nearby people to know your exact location. You feel very naked pointing this at the sky, even if your hobby is just pointing out stars. If you want to do something as dumb as pointing at planes even though I personally think it’s over dramatized(but the law is the law), then don’t be surprised that someone will notice you, they’d have to be blind not to see your obvious stupidity trying to aim at a plane with an illegal device.

I don’t aim at planes and always try to look before shooting, I don’t let anyone touch it, and keep the thing stored with the key and interlock in separate locations and the shutter closed, nobody is allowed to touch it but me I don’t trust anyone with this thing. I can just imagine some kid picking it up and pushing the button of one of these “wicked lasers”, and playing with it with the push of a button.

I don’t think any of you are dumb, I just feel that your criticism is a bit immature and uncalled for if you don’t know what these things are able to do. It’s not a toy, it should never be pointed at people no matter what the circumstance, it should never be pointed at reflecting surfaces without proper safety equipment, and it should be locked away from children/teens under the age of 21. I know soon to be 18 year olds who wants this and the first thing they want to do is to point it at buildings/people. I even know some college students who I wouldn’t trust with this.

36. Rob Says:

It is my understanding that if a red laser damages your eye it will only damage the low wave receptors in your eyes and everything will appear blue. The blue laser (only $2000) will damage only the high wave receptors in your eyes and everything will appear red. A green laser will burn all your eyes receptors and you will be blinded.
If you are looking to ” melt stuff ” I would assume that a high powered Infrared laser would be safest to your eyes receptors although it will cook the inside of your eye like a microwave if you stare directly at the beam long enough. It is not wise to look directly at the infrared light on a remote control either.
I purchased a 5mw green laser for pointing to the sky while stargazing. The 5mw laser is inadequate in perfect stargazing conditions ( no humidity ).
The Aries-75 75mw green laser pointer has all the safety devices. Does anyone know if it can easily be seen when pointed to the sky on a perfectly clear night? Should I go for the 100mw version?

Rob

37. College Student Says:

Yes, the Aries-75 is a good choice, I have a Pyxis 30mW and it’s very visible and nice. Pyxis is only bad because you have to hold the button and you can only keep it on for 20 sec. Aries for 2 min on the other hand. (good choice)

It takes a lot of power to actually melt stuff, I’d say 30mW 1cm away from source, 169mW about 1-2 feet away.

You can clearly see the 30mW one, i’m sure the 75 will do an amazing job.

My Aries 150 is just plain scary because it’s soo visible, I don’t think you would notice “much” difference between 75/100, but the bonus is, the less power it consumes the longer it lasts.

Red lasers… hmm 100mW, I don’t think it’s any different than green, the only reason why infrared is used in industry and why it’s so strong is because you don’t want to be able to see a 1-2Watt laser beem, you will blind yourself just looking at it, all you need is it’s sheer power etching plastic/aluminum very acurately. My friend works at a metal/plastic etching company and he tells me their lasers are invisible and you can only see the metal sparks flying and the laser just bombarding it, you don’t see the actual beam. The whole point of industrial lasers are their strong ability to inflict damage acurately, not their fancy light show effects.

44. Laser Fun Says:

Do you think this is a good idea to have w/ so many brain-dead kids running around?

45. Mo Says:

Guys, you know how difficult it is to freakin aim at someones eyes long enough for the laser to take a toll on them.

Anyways the receiver of the laser beam should be a little bit clever and obviously know that he/she must be careful around it and not to look into it like an arse.

46. Very Curious Says:

I stumbled across this thread while doing a Google search. All of you seem very knowledgeable so I’d like to ask something that has bothered me for years:

Several years ago, a neighbor across the street began stalking and harassing me with his laser pointer. (Long story, we went out once or twice, but he was very hostile.) He was well known to use it on friends and neighbors as a “joke” but my experience went beyond that, into police calls and a lawsuit, etc. After another woman in the building behind him also experienced similar problems–and also called police and eventually had to sue for harassment and stalking–it was important for me to move.

Here is my confusion: When the stalking originally happened, it was a simple red or green light. As the months went on, it became very weird and seemed like he was using something more sophisticated, the laser pointer to project his image (like with a projector?) onto light sources, like flourescent bulbs, tv, night lights, computer screens. (Also, the light source was much brighter and white and would burn my eyes.) Are there laser “projectors”? Can you project a moving image onto a light source to cast a shadow? Could you use a laser pointer or such to look into a person’s apartment? Or, was all of that part imagined?

I know this sounds weird but at the time it seemed like it was happening.
Or I could have been just been stressed. Years later, there are flashbacks.
Yes, both suits were settled but that was hardly the point. It was a freaky and unnerving experience.

47. Knine Says:

Sure, lasers like most other things are dangerous IF used with out care or common sense. If you are careful, they are safe.

I know because i have a 125mW laser pointer from http://www.dragonlasers.com and it can burn things. I’ve had no problems cos i am careful not stupid like some people.

48. DJ HaKa Says:

wicked are waaay overpriced… u can find 5000 mw alsers for alot cheaper per mw (yes i said 5,000 mw)
