Sony introduced two new digital cameras today which are supposedly great for low-light shooting. The new Sony DSC-W30 and Sony DSC-W50 are both otherwise pretty standard in features. 6 megapixel, Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lenses, large LCD (2-inch for DSC-W30 and 2.5-inch for DSC-W50), 5-area multi-point auto-focus, MPEG1 (640 x 480, 30 fps) video recording and 32MB of internal memory expandable via Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. What might be of interest to some is that both of them have the shape and feel of a traditional camera.
With a maximum of ISO 1000 light-sensitivity and Sony’s Clear RAW â„¢ imaging technology, Sony claims that this will allow shooting at higher shutter speeds to capture fast-moving subjects but without any dramatic noise in the resulting picture. Of course, we’ll only know how well it does after we get some 3rd-party reviews.
The DSC-W30 will be available this month for about $230, whereas the DSC-W50 will only be available early March for about $250. It seems like the DSC-W50 is a much better deal. For $20 more you get a larger display and a cooler brushed metal finish instead of plain silver. And finally, both are available for pre-order right now (Sony DSC-W30, Sony DSC-W50).
