Samsung has announced its 32GB flash-based solid state disk (SSD) yesterday and it sure looks promising! So why SSD?

  • They are silent
  • Because they do not contain any rotating mechanism so there is less chance of failure
  • Data are instantly accessible (no spin-ups and spin-downs)
  • They are 3 times faster at reading and 1.5 times faster at writing (for the pioneer models)
  • They are lighter
  • They consume only 5% of the electricity needed to power a regular hard drive
  • They run cooler so your notebook won’t heat your lap

But well, according to ZDNet, flash memories are currently about 42 times more expensive than regular hard drives, gigabyte for gigabyte. Guess I’ll stick to my noisy, hot and vibrating Maxtor for now.

http://www.dvnation.com/ssd.html has SSDs now! From 8GB to 128GB in capacity. IDE and SATA. As low as $599. The speeds vary but the features are mostly the same. Indestructable. Rugged. I put the 16GB SSD in my Aopen Pandora miniPC and will put one in my next laptop computer.
