Remember the Olympus EVOLT E-330 that was announced in January? Yes, the first DSLR camera that is capable of “live” LCD preview. DPReview has made an in-depth review on this camera and given the camera an overall “Recommended” rating (which is a notch short of “Highly Recommended”).
The main complaints includes:
- Price. More expensive than the Olympus E-500 (which DPReview thinks is better) yet feature set isn’t outstanding.
- ISO 1600 not really usable
- Poor noise reduction algorithm
- Confusing dual mode “live” LCD preview
- No auto focus and metering in live preview ‘B mode’
- No representation of selected white balance in either live view mode
- Not instant startup (1.6 sec)
- Lack of status LCD can mean shorter battery life (LCD monitor takes more power)
- Only USB 1.1 (gasp!)
The only redeeming feature of the E-330 is its unique “live” LCD preview, although in DPReview’s opinion is poorly implemented. This feature can be a good motivation for compact camera users to move up to the DSLR market. But realistically, most DSLR users would probably find themselves preferring the viewfinder more often than not. Also worth mentioning is its Dust Reduction System, which removes dust on the camera sensor with vibrations.
The Olympus EVOLT E-330 with kit lens is currently available at $1,045 from Amazon.
