The long-awaited Sony PlayStation 3 E3 event is finally here. For those of you who have been following the news of PS3’s controller design change, the real PS3 controller design is finally here. Pictured above, the new PS3 controller design doesn’t look very different from the PS2’s. But beneath it lies several interesting features such as XYZ axis, pitch, roll, yaw, lateral motion detection and wireless connection via Bluetooth. Unfortunately, vibration will not be in, and it is said that vibrations would interfere with the controller’s motion detection.
As for the console itself, the design remains the same. It isn’t bad looking anyway, except we’ve probably all gotten quite tired of it.
Features mentioned at E3:
- Powered by Cell processor
- CD, DVD and Blu-ray compatibility
- Bluetooth, WiFi and Ethernet
- Dolby Digital Surround Sound
- Legacy SD to Full HD support (1080p)
- Up to 7 players
- Pre-installed HDD (20GB or 60GB)
- USB, MemoryStick, SD and Compact Flash compatible
- Over 15,000 titles expected
- Interoperability with PSP via network, USB or MemoryStick
The PlayStation 3’s community services were also touched on briefly. Features we can expect:
- Video chat
- Friends list
- Ranking
- Player profile
- Voice messaging
- Text messaging
Finally, we have what we’re all most interested in, that is the pricing. Two flavors of PS3 are expected at launch, a $499 20GB and a $599 60GB HDD configuration. The difference between the two packages isn’t just HDD alone; the 20GB loses MemoryStick/SD/CF compatibility, WiFi and HDMI Out.
Not exactly cheap. But I’m certain that many teenagers would get their little hands on the first batches of the console nonetheless. When it launches “worldwide†in Japan, North America, Europe and Australia in early November 2006, let’s hope that there would be a price reduction.
