Successor to the wildly popular Canon EOS 350D is finally here. Although existing 350D users might not feel very compelled to upgrade, I suppose it is necessary to counter the rivals’ release such as the Nikon D80 and Sony Alpha A100.
Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Canon EOS 400D is the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. Like Olympus and Sony’s counterpart, it’s all about the sensor vibrating at insane speed to remove any dust that is stuck on the sensor.
Other improvements over 350D:
- 10.1-megapixel vs 8-megapixel
- 9 focusing points vs 7 focusing points
- 3.0 fps up to 27 frames vs 3.0 fps up to 14 JPEG / 4 RAW frames
- 2.5″ TFT LCD with 230,000 pixels vs 1.8″ TFT LCD with 115,000 pixels
- 126.5 x 94.2 x 65 mm vs 127 x 94 x 64 mm
- 510g vs 490g
A welcomed feature for existing 350D users is the support for the BG-E3 Battery Grip, which is the same one for the 350D. But like the 350D, the 400D still lacks Spot Metering that a minority is still crying out for.
Price is expected to be $799 for the body (i.e. no kit lens).
