Buyers of the Dell XPS M1710 notebook now has the option to add a Blu-Ray disc drive, which burns BD, DVD, and CD. It even has double layer BD write capability.
A pretty beefy notebook that comes with the following for the default $3,699 setup:
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 processor
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX
- 1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ
- 80GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
- 17-inch 1920×1200 widescreen display
- Measures 15.51″ (W) x 1.69″ (H) x 11.30″ (D)
- Weighs 8.714 lbs
The loud and bold red finish might not be up to everyone’s taste. But with such a killer weight, I believe it’s wiser to use it more often as a desktop replacement than as something that follows you 24/7.

I got one of these a while back, they are amazing, yes. A desktop replacement definately, but a laptop is a laptop. It fits in a bag, and the weight doesn’t stop it being portable. I take it to work, friends houses etc.
Don’t be put off by the weight of a laptop! I don’t see the benefits of a lighter, smaller laptop in terms of its size. Big or small, they both fit in a bag. Unless you have a disability it’s not too heavy to carry long distances, although you would definately need a backpack type bag and not a case you hold in your hand.
The battery life is just as good as any other laptop. I am not sure about this blu-ray thing though. I am unconvinced.

Nice to hear that you are enjoying yours, Simon. But I believe that lightweight laptops still have their place. Some people just prefer less weight to a powerful laptop.
Like a friend of mine who is an air stewardess. Even a MacBook is too heavy she said, so she got herself one of those Sony VAIO ultraportables. The XPS M1710 might just break her skinny bones.

Hehe! A coworker of mine bought a limited edition Hanshin Tigers one from a store here in Osaka. I must admit, I really wanted one and was feeling quite jealous! It was tiny and weighed almost nothing. Very cool, but I really only wanted it because it looked good. Once your laptop is on a desk, its portability doesn’t really matter. Perhaps on a plane or in another confined space without a desk small is good, but considering how much more you have to pay for small (the XPS range actually has a mobile laptop which is very small and lightweight, but it costs a lot!) I can’t really justify it to myself!
