Mobile

Steve Jobs and iPhone.

With the iPhone just one day away, all you Apple fanboys must be really excited. And thanks to Gizmodo, here is a big list of what features the iPhone has:

  • Built-in iPod with Video playback
  • Intelligent predictive typing
  • Multi-touch interface (fast)
  • Great scratch resistant screen (easily cleaned with your sleeve)
  • Tilt sensors that lock the screen when up to your face, but unlocks it when you lower it to type numbers
  • Screen that’s visible in direct sunlight
  • Software upgrades over time
  • Decent voice quality
  • Call and song control from its headphones
  • Viewing Word, Excel and PDF documents
  • Free live traffic in Google Maps
  • Turn by turn directions that simulate a GPS (need to tell the phone when you’re turning)
  • Dedicated volume control and mute switch
  • Microsoft Exchange support if your IT staff enables a setting on the server
  • Push email via Yahoo Mail
  • Syncing via Outlook calendar and contacts through iTunes (works even on Vista with the latest Outlook)
  • Ability to play with other applications while you talk
  • Good battery life
  • A “real” browser
  • Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, EarthLink, and various other email support
  • Visual voicemail (support for rewinding, fast forwarding like a song)
  • YouTube support
  • Decent 2-megapixel camera
  • It’s thin
  • Lots of eye candy
  • Conference call with up to 5 people
  • Built-in speakers if you don’t want to use headphones
  • Quicktime support in Safari
  • Activating the phone requires iTunes and internet access
  • A speakerphone

And here are the features confirmed by Apple that will not make it into the phone:

  • Support for all iPod accessories—doesn’t support all car adapters for playing back, only charging
  • An easy way to transfer phone numbers, via AT&T, from an existing phone
  • Copy and paste support
  • MP3/iTunes music ringtones
  • Built-in game support
  • Flash support anywhere (including browser)
  • Instant Messaging
  • Picture messaging (MMS)
  • Video recording
  • Voice recognition or voice dialing
  • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP support)
  • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)
  • 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
  • A hardware keyboard
  • GPS
  • Removable battery
  • Expandable Storage
  • Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
  • BlackBerry support
  • Flash or zoom on the camera
  • Windows Media support

No MP3 ringtone support kinda sucks. But other than that, everything just looks so sweet!

Let the countdown begin…

Judging by today’s selloff, I think potential customers are starting to realize how expensive the iPhone will be. If you sign the mid-range $99.99/mo service plan after purchasing the 8GB iPhone model, that alone will set you back $3000 during the two-year contract (without any accessories)!

Here’s a few other potential hurdles that could prevent the iPhone from exceeding its already lofty expectations:

    * You must be an AT&T customer to use the iPhone. With a market share of 20%, that means 80% of wireless customers must cancel their current contracts to sign with AT&T. Being a Sprint customer, I would have to pay a $175 cancellation on top of the $3000 price tag for the iPhone. AT&T’s exclusive contract runs through 2009.
    * Only 4 & 8GB of hard drive space? My tiny video iPod holds 30 GB for less than $200.
    * Recent surveys have shown that the majority of IT departments will not even consider the iPhone due to its PC incompatibilities & exclusive AT&T contract. That will dampen business spending & all but eliminate demand for the higher-tier contracts.

    “Sell the News”

This is the ultimate “sell the news” scenario. On Jan 9th 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld Conference & Expo. The stock has since been on fire rising 50% to $125, adding $30 billion to the company’s market capitalization. Will the iPhone really hold that much value for Apple? This huge runup comes after a fantastic finish to 2006 after Apple’s stock bottomed out at $50 in October. Thus, nearly everyone holding Apple is sitting on huge gains.

Expect an Apple selloff on Friday when the iPhone is finally released. 3 similar mini-selloffs have occurred during this recent runup:

    * June 26th: Apple announces 6 AT&T service plans for the iPhone. The stock drops 3% on investor concerns over the high prices.
    * June 11th: Steve Jobs shows off the iPhone at Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference. The stock falls 5% after investors saw no “surprises”.
    * March 20th: Apple beats 4th quarter analyst earnings & revenue estimates. The stock falls on profit taking.

Apple’s recent success has created impossible expectations. With all the mega-hype already priced into the stock, just meeting expectations will create a selloff. I plan to sell tomorrow and buy back in a couple months. Longer-term investors need not worry because the future looks bright with Macs gaining market share & the iPods continuing their dominant foothold on the music industry.

I saw this phone the other day and I played around with for like 20 mins. I don’t see what the big deal about this phone is. The world just likes to hype things like this through the roof. People who can afford such a phone I would think wouldn’t really have the time of day to put this phone to ultimate use…and if someone is buying this for their kid, and doesn’t make more than 100k a year; you need to step back and take a look at ur priorities in life.

  4. kiddie Says:

I think people would be better off buying some cellphone with more capabilities than this + laptop and an iPod

  5. Michael Says:

I think that the nokia N95 has solved all these problems of the iphone. People would better buy it…It’s cheaper

  6. Lisi Says:

No video recording ? No mp3 ringtone ? What is this ? And so expensive, come on guys this is not good at all. I don’t like it.

  7. brad Says:

I’m so glad that I didn’t get that iphone, the hype was more than the capabilities, too much limitations!
